Do you still have a location in Santa Clara or Diamond Springs?
We are no longer located in Santa Clara or Diamond Springs.
Where and when can I borrow, return, or donate equipment?
Pick-ups, returns, and donations are in San Carlos, CA at 1063 E San Carlos Avenue. We are open on Saturdays from 12pm-2pm except on holiday weekends.
How do I donate equipment?
Please visit this page and fill out the form to share information about the equipment with us. You can expect a return email from AbleCloset.
Do I need to qualify to borrow equipment?
You do not need to qualify. Any family with a special needs child regardless of income level, may borrow appropriate equipment as long as they agree to our terms and conditions. AbleCloset reserves the right to refuse equipment loans.
Is there a fee to borrow equipment?
There is no fee to borrow equipment. AbleCloset is a non-profit organization that runs solely on donations and grants. We are 100% volunteer-run. Monetary donations are appreciated to help cover our operating expenses. For information on how to donate, see below.
How long can I keep the equipment?
We offer a 6 month equipment loan period for most items. Some specialty equipment may have time limits of 2 weeks to 2 months. This is typically the case for recreational equipment. AbleCloset is a “loaner” program, designed to provide equipment for children to evaluate types of equipment to see if it works for them, and to have to use while waiting to obtain their own equipment. This can be a lengthy process. AbleCloset is not intended to be a family’s first and only resource for long term equipment needs.
How many pieces of equipment can I borrow?
A family can borrow up to three pieces of equipment at one time.
How do I return equipment?
Please return the equipment cleaned and complete during our regular Saturday warehouse hours. You can return it before the 6 month loan period if you no longer need it. If you need to use it longer than the 6 month loan period, please email us at info@ablecloset.com regarding an extension.
Can I reserve a piece of equipment?
We no longer take reservations for equipment, we provide it on a first come first served basis. We recommend that you search the website to identify what you want to borrow. When you find what you are looking for, write down the equipment ID number and bring that with you when you come to the warehouse.
Should I bring my child to the appointment?
We strongly recommend that you bring your child to the appointment if at all possible to help check the fit and function of the equipment before you take it home. It is not unusual for families to come in for one piece of equipment and leave with another. Bring your child’s shoes and braces, especially if you are looking for standing and walking equipment.
How can I ensure this equipment is right for my child?
The family must have a therapist available to check the safety and sizing of the equipment as AbleCloset is unable to provide these services.
Can our therapist pick up the equipment for us?
Yes. A therapist or family member may pick up the equipment. However, the parent or legal guardian must complete and sign a Release of Liability form, Alternatively, we can email you the form. Contact us at info@ablecloset.com.
Is there any required paperwork?
Yes. Loaning of the equipment is contingent upon the family completing the Release of Liability form.
Do you offer adult sized equipment?
The equipment at AbleCloset is designed primarily for children. If you would like to borrow or donate adult sized equipment, please contact our sister organization, the Medical Equipment Loan Program (MELP) at their website. We are in the same location as MELP at 1063 E. San Carlos Ave, San Carlos, CA.
